I swing by the apartment, grab my bathing suit, then drive down to the river to the “gay” beach, which is really just a sandbar tucked in behind some weeds.

Who should I run into but Lance?

“Thought you said you were gonna call.”

I stand on the edge of his beach towel. “I did. But your grandmother answered, and I didn’t know if it was OK to leave a message or not.”

“Liar.” He plants his feet on my thighs.

“So I’m a shy guy.”

“You didn’t seem so shy last Friday night.” He studies me carefully. “But I’ll forgive you this once as long as you promise not to disappoint me again.”

“I’ll try not to. Is that good enough?”

“We’ll see.” He hops up and disappears into the bushes. I follow, praying to avoid the poison ivy.
